“ DADDY AM I STUPID?”:
THE DYSLEXIA DILEMMA
The first day of school in Kentucky brings many things to
mind: new subjects, new friends and new opportunities. These
are the memories that many cherish and hold dear, but for
children with dyslexia, the end of summer brings more than
a chill in the air. Their tribulations are explored in Daddy
Am I Stupid? The Dyslexia Dilemma a production supported by
the KET Fund For Independent Production.
For the child with dyslexia, school brings about the chilling
feelings of anxiety and frustration that those who absorb
the written word effortlessly can never truly understand.
Dyslexia is a reading disorder that strikes one in five Kentucky
children--despite good schooling, diligent parenting and normal
to above-average intelligence.
Daddy, Am I Stupid? The Dyslexia Dilemma tells the story
of dyslexia first hand from the point of view of a Kentucky
man, Dr. Robert Dahlem of Louisville, whose son has grown
up tortured by the disability. Dahlem is now trying to help
children struggling against this ever-puzzling learning disability.
According to experts, Kentucky's dyslexic children drop out
at more than twice the rate of their peers, and are over represented
in the prison population and in alcohol and drug abuse treatment
programs. They are more likely to attempt suicide and withdraw
from family and friends. And as they enter adulthood, they
are more likely to be unemployed, under-employed-- or even
unemployable. They form the single largest identifiable group
to whom we provide assistance, housing, medical care and other
social services. |
